Precautions while Using this Medicine
Liver problems may be more likely to occur if you drink alcoholic beverages while you are taking ketoconazole. Alcoholic beverages may also cause stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, or flushing or redness of the face. Other alcohol-containing preparations (for example, elixirs, cough syrups, tonics) may also cause problems. These problems may occur for at least a day after you stop taking ke toconazole. Therefore, you should not drink alcoholic beverages or use alcohol-containing preparations while you are taking this medicine and for at least a day after you stop taking it.

What side effects can this medication cause?
For women taking a single dose to treat vaginal infection, the most common side effects are abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, and nausea; changes in taste, dizziness, and indigestion may occur less often.

Less common side effects may include:
- Abdominal pain, diarrhea, headache, skin rash, vomiting

How to Use
You can take Diflucan with or without meals.

Take this medication exactly as prescribed, and continue taking it for as long as your doctor instructs. You may begin to feel better after the f irst few days; but it takes weeks or even months of treatment to completely cure certain fungal infections

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
When you are taking Diflucan, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:

- Vincristine (e.g., Oncovin)—Metabolism of these dr gs may be delayed by itraconazole.
- Felodipine (e.g., Plendil) or
- Nifedipine (e.g., Procardia) or
- Verapamil (e.g., Isoptin, Covera)—Concurrent use can cause water retention or sl the heart rate.
- Carbamazepine (e.g., Tegretol) or
- Phenobarbital (e.g., Luminal)
- Phenytoin (e.g., Dilantin)—Concurrent use with itraconazole may decrease itraconazole concentrati ns. Phenytoin concentrations may be increased.
- Cyclosporine (e.g., Sandimmune, Neoral)

Why is this drug prescribed?
Diflucan is used to treat fungal infections called candidiasis (also known as thrush or yeast infections). These include vaginal infections, throat infections, and fungal infections elsewhere in the b ody, such as infections of the urinary tract, peritonitis (inflammation of the lining of the abdomen), and pneumonia. Diflucan is also prescribed to guard against candidiasis in some people receiving bone marrow transplants, and is used to treat meningitis (brain or spinal cord inflammation) caused by another type of fungus.

In addition, Diflucan is now being prescribed for fungal infect ions in kidney and liver transplant patients, and fungal infections in patients with AIDS.

Precautions Before Using This Medicine
Pregnancy—Studies have not been done in pregnant women. However, studies in some animals have shown that Diflucan, taken in high doses, may cause harm to the mother and the fetus. They have caused bi th defects in animals. Before taking these medicines, make sure your doctor knows if you are pregnant or if you may become pregnant.Breast-feeding—Diflucan pass into breast milk. Mothers who are taki g these medicines and who wish to breast-feed should discuss this with their doctors.
