How should this medicine be used?
Take acetaminophen / butalbital / caffeine - Fioricet exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Description
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer. Butalbital is in a class of drugs called barbiturates that slow down your central nervous system (brain and nerve impulses) causing relaxation. Caff eine is believed to constrict dilated blood vessels that may contribute to tension headaches. Together, acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine are used to relieve complex tension (muscle contraction) headaches although precisely how it works is unknown. Acetaminophen / butalbital / caffeine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
When you are taking a butalbital and acetaminophen combination, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:

- Anticoagulants (b lood thinners), or
- Carbamazepine (e.g., Tegretol) or
- Contraceptives, oral (birth control pills) containing estrogen, or
- Corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicines) or
- Cortic otropin (e.g., ACTH)—Butalbital may make these medicines less effective

What side effects can this medication cause?
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking acetaminophen / butalbital / caffeine - Fioricet and seek emergency medical attention: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathi ng; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); slow, weak breathing; liver damage (yellowing of the skin or eyes, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, unusual bleedin g or bruising, severe fatigue); blood problems (easy or unusual bleeding or bruising); or low blood sugar (fatigue, increased hunger or thirst,

Cautions
The butalbital in this medicine will add to the effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system, possibly causing drowsiness). Some examples of CNS depressant s are antihistamines or medicine for hay fever, other allergies, or colds; sedatives, tranquilizers, or sleeping medicine; other prescription pain medicine; narcotics; other barbiturates; medicine for seizures; muscle relaxants; or anesthetics, including some dental anesthetics. Also, drinking large amounts of alcoholic beverages regularly while taking this medicine may increase the chance of live r damage, especially if you take more of this medicine than your doctor ordered or if you take it regularly for a long time.

Precautions Before Using This Medicine
Before taking acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine,

tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to acetaminophen, butalbital, caffeine, or any other drugs.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had liver disease, porphyria, or depression.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, call your doctor.
