Why is this medication prescribed?
Flonase (floo-TIK-a-sone ) belongs to the family of medicines known as corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicines). Corticosteroids belong to the family of medicines called steroids. Flonase is sprayed
into the nose to help relieve the stuffy or runny nose, irritation, sneezing, and discomfort of hay fever, other nasal allergies, and these symptoms when not caused by allergies.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
The risk of developing Cushing's syndrome and other side effects increases when you take other steroid medications while using flonase. Prednisone and dexamethasone are examples of oral steroid medica
tions. Certain other asthma inhalers, skin creams, eyedrops, and eardrops also may contain steroids.
Also be sure to check with your doctor before combining flonase with ketoconazole (Nizora
l) or HIV drugs known as protease inhibitors, including Agenerase, Crixivan, Fortovase, Norvir, and Viracept.

Overdose
Acne; blurred vision; bone fractures; excess hair growth in females; fullness or rounding of the face, neck, and trunk; high blood pressure; impotence in males ; increased urination or thirst;
lack of menstrual periods; menstrual changes; muscle wasting and weakness

Before Using This Medicine
Pregnancy¡XNasal Flonase has not been studied in pregnant women. However, in animal studies, Flonase given by injection was shown to cause birth defects, although oral doses did not.

What special precautions should I follow?
Make sure you tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially:
- Glaucoma¡XRare cases of glaucoma have been reported following use of nasal corticosteroids, including nasal Fl
nase
- Herpes simplex (virus) infection of the eye or
- Infections (viral, bacterial, parasitic, or fungal)¡XNasal corticosteroids may cover up the signs of these infections
- Injury to
the nose (recent) or
- Nose surgery (recent) or
- Sores in the nose¡XNasal corticosteroids may prevent proper healing of these conditions
- Tuberculosis (active or history of)¡XNasal co
icosteroids may cover up the signs of this infection or cause it to start up again

Special warnings about this medication
Check with your doctor:
- if signs of a nose, sinus, or throat infection occur.
- if your symptoms do not improve within 7 days (for dexamethasone) or within 3 weeks (for beclomethasone
, budesonide, flunisolide, Flonase, mometasone, or triamcinolone).
- if your condition gets worse.
