Why is this drug prescribed?
Flonase (floo-TIK-a-sone ) belongs to the family of medicines known as corticosteroids (cortisone-like medicines). Corticosteroids belong to the family of medicines called steroids. Flonase is sprayed into the nose to help relieve the stuffy or runny nose, irritation, sneezing, and discomfort of hay fever, other nasal allergies, and these symptoms when not caused by allergies.

Special warnings about this medication
Flovent Rotadisk inhalation powder is also taken orally. Assemble the Rotadisk Diskhaler according to package instructions. To use, exhale, then place the Diskhaler mouthpiece between your teeth (with out biting down) and close your lips firmly around it. (Be careful to avoid covering the small air holes on either side of the mouthpiece.) Breathe in through your mouth as deeply as you can, then hol d your breath while you remove the Diskhaler. Continue to hold your breath as long as you comfortably can, up to a maximum of 10 seconds.

What special precautions should I follow?
Check with your doctor:

- if signs of a nose, sinus, or throat infection occur.
- if your symptoms do not improve within 7 days (for dexamethasone) or within 3 weeks (for beclomethasone , budesonide, flunisolide, Flonase, mometasone, or triamcinolone).
- if your condition gets worse.

Proper Use of This Medicine
Flonase is taken in the nostrils. For best effect, take the prescribed doses at regular intervals. First, blow your nose. Then shake the spray bottle gently, prime the pump 6 times if it hasn't been u sed during the past week, tilt your head back, press one nostril closed, and insert the tip of the bottle a short way into the other nostril. Spray once, pull the tip of the bottle away from your nose , and inhale deeply through the treated nostril. Repeat with the other nostril.

Flovent inhalation aerosol is taken orally. Shake the canister before each use. Take a deep breath and exhale. Then, as you begin to inhale, put your lips around the mouthpiece and depress the canister. Rinse your mouth with water after each use of the inhaler.

Precautions Before Using This Medicine
Breast-feeding—Use of dexamethasone is not recommended in nursing mothers, since dexamethasone passes into breast milk and may affect the infant's growth.
It is not known whether beclomethasone, b desonide, flunisolide, Flonase or triamcinolone passes into breast milk. Although most medicines pass into breast milk in small amounts, many of them may be used safely while breast-feeding. Levels of mometasone are not measurable in breast milk, thus exposure is expected to be low. Mothers who are taking these medicines and wish to breast-feed should discuss them with their doctor.

Other Medicines
The risk of developing Cushing's syndrome and other side effects increases when you take other steroid medications while using flonase. Prednisone and dexamethasone are examples of oral steroid medica tions. Certain other asthma inhalers, skin creams, eyedrops, and eardrops also may contain steroids.

Also be sure to check with your doctor before combining flonase with ketoconazole (Nizora l) or HIV drugs known as protease inhibitors, including Agenerase, Crixivan, Fortovase, Norvir, and Viracept.
