Why is this medication prescribed?
Imitrex ( Sumatriptan ) is a headache medicine. It is believed to work by causing vasoconstriction (narrowing) of arteries and veins that supply blood to your head. Imitrex ( Sumatriptan ) tablets and
injections are used to treat vascular headaches such as migraine and cluster headaches. Imitrex ( Sumatriptan ) will not prevent migraines or cluster headaches or reduce the number of attacks. It wil
l only treat a migraine or cluster headache that is already occurring. Imitrex ( Sumatriptan ) may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
If Imitrex is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either may be increased, decreased, or altered. It is important to check with your doctor before combining Imitrex with the following:
- Drugs classified as MAO inhibitors, including the antidepressants Nardil and Parnate
- Ergot-containing drugs such as Cafergot and Ergostat
- Fluoxetine (Prozac)
- Fluvoxamine (
Luvox)
- Paroxetine (Paxil)
- Sertraline (Zoloft)

How should this medicine be used?
If you are not much better in 1 or 2 hours after an injection of sumatriptan, or in 2 to 4 hours after a tablet is taken, do not use any more of this medicine for the same migraine. A migraine that is
not relieved by the first dose of sumatriptan probably will not be relieved by a second dose, either. Ask your doctor ahead of time about other medicine to be taken if sumatriptan does not work. Afte
r taking the other medicine, check with your doctor as soon as possible. Headaches that are not relieved by sumatriptan are sometimes caused by conditions that need other treatment. However, even if s
umatriptan does not relieve one migraine, it may still relieve the next one.

Special warnings about this medication
Check with your doctor if you have used .Imitrex for three headaches, and have not had good relief. Also, check with your doctor if your migraine headaches are worse, or if they are occurring more oft
en, than before you started using .Imitrex.
Drinking alcoholic beverages can make headaches worse or cause new headaches to occur. People who suffer from severe headaches should probably avoi
d alcoholic beverages, especially during a headache.
Some people feel drowsy or dizzy during or after a migraine, or after taking .Imitrex to relieve a migraine. As long as you are feeling dr
owsy or dizzy, do not drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert.

What side effects can this medication cause?
Less common or rare side effects may include:
- Abdominal discomfort, agitation, allergic reactions (severe), anxiety, asthma, backache, backflow of stomach contents, bleeding between periods, bl
eeding in ears, nose or throat, breast tenderness, burning/numbness of tongue, changes in heart rhythm, chills, cold sensation, confusion, constipation, cough, depression, diarrhea, difficult or labor
ed breathing, difficult or painful urination, difficulty concentrating, difficulty speaking, difficulty swallowing, drowsiness/calmness, dry mouth, ear infection, ear pain, exaggerated feeling of well
-being, eye irritation, facial pain, fainting, fatigue, feeling strange, fever, general feeling of illness, headache, hearing loss, hearing disturbance,

Before Using This Medicine
