Proper Use of This Medicine
Take this medicine only as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered. If too much is taken, it may becom e habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence).

Take Sonata just before going to bed, when you are ready to go to sleep. This medicine works very quickly to put you to sleep.
Do not take this medicine when your schedule does not permit you to get at least 4 hours of sleep.If you must wake up before this, you may continue to feel drowsy and may experience memory problems , because the effects of the medicine have not had time to wear off.

Precautions while Using this Medicine
This medicine may cause some people, especially older persons, to become drowsy, dizzy, lightheaded, clumsy or unsteady, or less alert than they are normally. Even though Sonata is taken at bedtime, i t may cause some people to feel drowsy or less alert on arising. Make sure you know how you react to Sonata before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are dizzy , unsteady, or are not alert or able to see well.

Why is this drug prescribed?
Sonata belongs to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that make you drowsy or less alert). Sonata is used to treat insomnia (trouble sleeping). In general , when sleep medicines are used every night for a long time, they may lose their effectiveness. In most cases, sleep medicines should be used only for short periods of time, such as 1 or 2 days, and g enerally for no longer than 1 or 2 weeks.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
When you are taking Sonata, it is especially important that your health care professional know if you are taking any of the following:

- Rifampin (e.g., Rifadin)¡XThese medicines may decrea e the effectiveness of Sonata
- Cimetidine (e.g., Tagamet)¡XCimetidine may interfere with the breakdown of Sonata in the body, possibly leading to unwanted effects
- Other central nervous s tem (CNS) depressants (medicines that cause drowsiness) or
- Tricyclic antidepressants (medicine for depression)¡XThe CNS depressant effects of either these medicines or Sonata may be increased, ossibly leading to unwanted effects

Overdose
An overdose of drugs such as Sonata can be fatal. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.

Symptoms of Sonata overdose may include:
Drowsiness, mental confusion, grogginess, lack of coordination, flaccid muscles, labored breathing, coma

Before Taking This Medicine
The presence of other medical problems may affect the use of Sonata. Make sure to tell your doctor if you have any other medical problems, especially
- Alcohol abuse (or history of) or
- Drug abuse or dependence (or history of)¡X Dependence on Sonata may develop
- Breathing problems or
- Mental depression¡XSonata may make the condition worse
- Liver disease¡X Higher blood ls of Sonata may result, increasing the chance of side effects.
