Precautions Before Using This Medicine
The effects of Tenuate or Tenuate Dospan during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. This drug appears in breast milk. If the medication is essential to your health, your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding until your treatment is finished.

Precautions while Using this Medicine
Your doctor should check your progress at regular visits to make sure that this medicine does not cause unwanted effects.

If you think this medicine is not working properly after you have tak en it for a few weeks, do not increase the dose. Instead, check with your doctor.

Do not take an appetite suppressant with or less than 14 days after taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibito r. If you do, you may very suddenly develop extremely high blood pressure.

Taking a sympathomimetic appetite suppressant may cause a positive result in urine screening tests for amphetamines.

Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication
Tenuate or Tenuate Dospan may interact with alcohol unfavorably. Do not drink alcohol while taking this medication.

If Tenuate or Tenuate Dospan is taken with certain other drugs, the effect s of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important that you consult your doctor before combining Tenuate with the following:

- Blood pressure medications such as Ismelin
- Insulin
- Phenothiazine drugs such as the major tranquilizer Thorazine

How should this medicine be used?
Tenuate comes as a regular and extended-release (long-acting) tablet. Tenuate usually is taken three times a day, 1 hour before meals (regular tablets), or once a day in midmorning (extended-release t ablets). Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Tenuate exactly as directed.

Do not crus h, chew, or cut extended-release tablets; swallow them whole.

Tenuate may be habit-forming. Do not take a larger dose, take it more often, or for a longer period than your doctor tells you to . Call your doctor if Tenuate loses its effect.
