Proper Use of This Medicine
Treatment with this drug begins while you are still smoking. Zyban needs about a week to reach an effective level in your body; so to improve your chance of success, you should not attempt to quit unt il the second week of treatment. Set a firm date for quitting. If you are still smoking after that date, your odds of breaking the habit will be worse. You should keep taking Zyban for 7 to 12 weeks.

You can use nicotine patches along with Zyban. However, combining the two treatments can raise your blood pressure, so it's important to tell your doctor if you plan to use both. Do not smok e while using a patch, because too much nicotine can cause serious side effects.

What Is It
Zyban was introduced in the USA in 1985 and was withdrawn in 1986 because of an unacceptable incidence of seizures. In 1989 it was reintroduced in the USA (maximum dose of 450 mg daily). In one RCT buproprion SR, 150 mg daily and 150 mg BID, were similar and more effective than placebo based on physician rated scores of d epression at 8 weeks.8 In 2 RCTs Zyban (150-400 mg/day) was similar in effectiveness to sertraline (50-200 mg/day) at 8 weeks, but the incidence of satisfaction with sexual functioning was less with s ertraline (63%) than buproprion (79%) and placebo (78%). 9, 10

Side Effects
Side effects from Zyban are common:

- drowsiness
- weakness or tiredness
- excitement or anxiety
- dry mouth
- insomnia
- nightmares
- change in appetite or wei ght

Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:

- frequent urination
- difficulty urinating
- constipation
- blurred vision
- change in sex drive or ability

- Ritonavir (e.g., Norvir)—Using these medicines with Zyban may increase the risk of seizures

Before Using This Medicine
Children—This medicine has been tested in a very small number of patients 6 to 16 years of age and has not been shown to cause different side effects or problems in children than it does in adults. M re testing is needed to decide whether Zyban is safe and effective for use in children.
